Tully Construction Co., Inc., (Tully) established in 1978,
is owned by the same family that has been in the construction and hauling industry
for over eighty years. In the years following World War I, Edward Tully Sr.
and Vincent (Pete) DiNapoli started a material hauling business for the coal
and construction industries. Starting in the early 1920's, with only one truck,
Tully and DiNapoli (T&D) bloomed into an impressive haulage fleet by the
early 1930's. T&D, as they were known at the time entered the general contracting
Industry and by the early 1940's, their family owned business became one of
the major names in the general contracting industry throughout the United States.
There was hardly a major roadway or bridge in the New York metropolitan area
that did not see the familiar Tully and DiNapoli emblem sometime during its
construction. For over 40 years, T&D trucks cranes and crews were at the
“Big Ones”—excavating, draining, pile driving, paving, shoring,
pumping, underpinning- literally laying the groundwork for some of the worlds
most admired structures and traffic arteries. |
Among T&D’s
first major projects was the construction of four steel cofferdams and the
erection of the main piers of the Triborough Bridge. In February of 1935
several months after the completion of this project, T&D was awarded
the contract to concrete pave the long viaduct between the Hells Gate Bridge
and the tollbooths. This project was completed in record time with T&D
receiving an early completion bonus for this accomplishment and the bridge
was ready for traffic by July 4th, 1935, and was officially dedicated and
opened by President Franklin Delano Roosevelt. Tully Construction continues
this tradition today as it has received early completion bonuses on 5 out
6 New York State projects it has done with the bonus system.
Tully and DiNapoli continued as one of the major U.S. contractors
in the 1950's and 1960's. They were involved in the construction of such
projects as: 1964-65 World’s Fair, Grand Central Parkway, Garden State
Parkway, New Jersey Turnpike, Cross Bronx Expressway, Southern State Parkway,
Long Island Expressway, Idlewild/Kennedy Airport, LaGuardia Airport, Triborough
Bridge, Whitestone Bridge and the foundation for the World Trade Center.
In 1971 as a second generation of principals evolved, Kenneth Tully and
his four brothers formed Willets Point Contracting Corporation (Willets
Point) to replace Tully and DiNapoli and Columbia Asphalt (the asphalt paving
subsidiary of Tully and DiNapoli). As the third generation emerged, Tully
Construction Co., Inc. and its affiliated companies evolved. |
For 18 years,
from 1971 to 1989, Willets Point Contracting Corp. was the vehicle through
which the Tully family completed work for: The City of New York, Department
of Transportation and Department of Sanitation, State of New York, Department
of Transportation, Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, Triborough
Bridge and Tunnel Authority. Willets Point Contracting worked in the New
York Metropolitan area almost exclusively, pouring more than 750,000 cubic
yards of concrete and placing over 1,000,000 tons of asphalt in the New
York City Metropolitan area. As the 1980’s came to an end it was decided
to expand into other areas while still continuing the successes of the past.
Willets Point began to bid on solid waste management projects for several
cities and towns on Long Island and New Jersey. The first such projects
were for the Town of Oyster Bay on Long Island and the Bergen County Utilities
Authority, in New Jersey. On these two project alone Willets Point disposed
of close to 2,000,000 tons of municipal solid waste.
Tully Construction started operating in 1988 as a Joint
Venture partner with Willets Point Contracting performing 3 major road construction
jobs, and the operation of the transfer station for Bergen County. In 1990,
Tully Construction Co. Inc. began operating on its own. The first contract
was an $18,000,000 Brooklyn asphalt resurfacing contract for the New York
City, Department of Transportation.
Since then, Tully Construction Company, Inc. has taken
up where Willets Point Contracting left off. Tully continues to work for
all the above mentioned agencies. The Tully family has expanded its business
interests into construction and closures of landfills, environmental remediation,
yard waste recycling and bio-solid reuse, waste water pollution plants,
and building demolition and construction, all this while continuing to be
one of the top heavy and highway contractors in the tri-state area.
Tully Construction Co., Inc. has expanded to other geographical
area’s, by completing projects in the County of Nassau, County of
Rockland, County of Westchester, City of Long Beach, City of Glen Cove,
Town of Oyster Bay, Town of Islip, Town of Smithtown, Middlesex New Jersey,
The Town of Hempstead, City of Stamford, Connecticut, Port Authority of
New York and New Jersey, and many other municipal agencies throughout the
New York metropolitan and tri-state areas.
Tully Construction and its affiliates have over 400 million
dollars worth of current projects either in progress or ready to start.
The work includes road construction, airport construction, sewage treatment
plant construction, building construction water mains, storm and sanitary
sewers, asphalt and concrete paving, landfill construction, solid waste
disposal, bio-solids hauling and disposal/reuse, yard waste hauling and
composting as well as a variety of other projects.
